A short note on the translation of "passion" into emotion:
I plan to write this topic in Indonesian. The first challenge I face is to translate the word "passion" itself. Often in this context "passion" is translated as "spirit", and it is too loose. Sometimes the "passion" translated into "desire". "Desire" is a synonym of desire, making it more suitable for translating "desire".
English Dictionary (Oxford), the definition of "passion" is "strong and barely controllable emotion". Google Translate suggest the word "emotion" to "passion". Indonesian dictionary defines "emotion" as "a sense of strong heart (longing, love, lust"). Thus, I think it is quite appropriate to translate "passion" to "emotion". The word "emotion" is not common, but perhaps we can begin to popularize it.

Just
like in some other countries, most of the urban middle class in
Indonesia is keen to follow "the cult of passion" or the cult of
emotion. This Kegetolan I think also because fueled by those who call themselves motivator, "life coach", and the like.
In America, the cult of emotion allegedly triggered by Steve Jobs
speech at Stanford University graduation ceremony, the summer of 2005.
Steve said,
"... The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you have not found it yet, keep looking. "
The contents of the speech Steve Jobs finally condensed into a slogan, "Follow renjanamu", and so was born the cult of emotion.
The basic idea in the cult of emotion is:
In every person, there is always the emotion that has long been present ("pre-existing"). Emotion that awaits us, ready to be discovered.
If we managed to find that emotion, we should follow in job or career. Only by working in accordance emotion, we can find happiness and success.
In
short, this belief in the cult of emotion is the starting point or the
prerequisites of happiness and achievement in the work. Work in the field that we love, then money and success will come-whether how. If we do not succeed we recognize emotion, it is almost impossible that we can find satisfaction in the workplace.
The basic idea in the cult of emotion seem intuitive, but not necessarily in accordance with reality. Do not forget the notion that the earth is flat and the sun around the earth feels intuitive, but proved wrong.

so-good-they-cant-ignoreCal Newport is a professor of computer science at Georgetown University. Newport
personal experience encouraged her to do research to test the
correctness of the basic idea behind the mantra "follow renjanamu". For several years, he memawawancari known many people who achieved success in their fields. He also review the various results of research in the field of satisfaction and motivation.
Newport found studies that show only a very few people who feel they have emotion that has been used since. On the contrary, studies show that people who feel very excited to
work precisely are those who've been in the field in a long time.
Newport also read the biography of Steve Jobs carefully. Regardless
of what that related Jobs in the speech at Stanford, it turns out he
and Steve Wozniak founded Apple in search of money through making
computer components. At that time, emotion Jobs is Eastern mysticism, and he must pay the cost of courses in Los Altos Zen Center. Ironic, is not it?
It is clear that emotion is not a prerequisite. Instead, Newport found that emotion is a consequence alias side effects. These side effects arise when we build a rare and valuable skill in our field.
In every field, there is always a defining characteristic of high quality work. Characteristic it is the result of a rare skill, so that people want to pay a high price. This is a skill that we need to build.
To get the skills, we have to pay for it with perseverance and hard work. We must often try in earnest, and get honest feedback and clear of those in that field.
These attitudes by Newport called the mentality of craftsmen ("craftman mindset"). People who adopt a mentality of artisans always thinking about how
they could be better in the field so that they can provide more value.
Newport comparing mentality mentality artisans with emotion ("passion mindset"). Whether
we realize it or not, people who live in the mentality of emotion often
question what's offered to them -seakan-going world have a duty open
field work in accordance with their emotion. When faced with difficulties in your work, they will ask, "Does this work has been in accordance with my emotion? Are there any other jobs that are more suitable for my emotion? "

Adopting the mentality of artisans and build valuable skills that are scarce and can make us be successful in our work. But will this will make us love our jobs, and get satisfaction from it?
Newport
summarizes the various studies indicating that the attributes that make
people love and getting satisfaction in his work is universal. That is, these attributes can be found in all areas of work, not just in certain areas. Attributes that are
We feel have autonomy in their work; we can control how we work ("sense of autonomy")
We feel capable of doing what we do, and can continue to improve these skills ("sense of mastery")
We feel that our work gives influence or contribute to the world or humanity ("sense of purpose").
It is clear that the mentality of artisans and build valuable skills that will lead us to the "sense of mastery". In addition, valuable skills we can make capital for autonomy in our work. We will have a better bargaining position in selecting projects we like and determine the style or the way we work.
What about the "sense of purpose"? The more we master our field, the easier it is for us to see how our work can contribute to the world. The more we master our field, the easier it is for us to see "the big picture". We even have the time and ability to last movement in it. This is where we can see more opportunities to make a breakthrough in other areas that intersect with our field.
For example, in the hands of Steve Jobs is no longer a computer is just a tool to improve office productivity. Jobs make the computer as a tool that is not only aesthetic value, but also provide an aesthetic experience during use. I'm pretty sure, Jobs could see this possibility more real by the time
he had mastered enough basic technology hardware and software.

Then if the suggestion to replace "follow renjanamu"? Newport was reluctant to give brief advice smelling slogan, but she knew he was alive at the time of 140 characters. According to Newport,
Passion is not something you follow. It's something that will follow you as you put in the hard work to Become valuable to the world.
Do not follow your passion, let it follow you in your quest to Become useful to the world.
